The monk practices spiritual reading. For him a book is not a source of information, but a way to pray. What if we always read as prayer, every book a scripture, whether science, fiction, or theology? Our minds might release some of their authority and influence, allowing our hearts, or some other place of reflection, to be nourished.

Open Mind, Open Heart
The Contemplative Dimension of the Gospel by Thomas Keating
The method of centering prayer is a way of reducing the ordinary obstacles to contemplation and preparing the human faculties to cooperate with this gift. It is an attempt to present the teaching of earlier times in an up-dated format and to put a certain order and regularity into it...Centering prayer is not end in itself, but a beginning. It is not done for the sake of having an experience, but for the sake of its positive fruits in one's life.
